Frequently Asked Questions
The questions sellers ask most. If yours isn't here, email me directly at nick@hobbyistpro.ca.
How do you decide what to offer? Is the quote binding?
I price cards based on the current market — recent eBay sold listings and TCGPlayer for individual cards, and a per-card rate for bulk. I look at condition, set, and print run. I'll explain my reasoning clearly so you can see how the number was reached.
The quote I send you is a firm offer, not a starting point for a negotiation game. If you accept and then send me the cards in the same condition shown in your photos, that's the number I pay — full stop. If there's a meaningful difference in condition versus what the photos showed, I'll flag it transparently before doing anything.
Do you pay more than a local card shop or big online buyer?
Often yes, sometimes no — it depends on what you're selling. Local card shops typically offer 30–50% of retail because they need margin to resell in-store. Large-volume online buyers offer convenience and speed at the cost of lower rates.
As an individual buyer who resells selectively, I can offer more competitive rates on cards I'm specifically looking for. I'm also not processing thousands of packages a day, which means I can actually look at your specific collection instead of applying a blanket formula.
I won't promise I'm always the highest offer — but I'll always be honest and clear about mine.
How do I get paid, and when?
Via Interac e-Transfer, typically the same day I receive and verify your cards. You don't need a special account — any Canadian bank account that accepts Interac works.
I don't do PayPal, gift cards, or cryptocurrency. If you need a different payment method, reach out and we can discuss.
Do you pay for shipping?
You cover postage to send your collection in. Once I've received it, reviewed it, and we finalize the deal, your shipping cost is reimbursed as part of your payout — so you're not out of pocket.
If you're local to Vancouver, we can skip shipping entirely and just meet up.
Why don't you prepay shipping?
It keeps offers fair for everyone. I confirm the final value once I've actually seen the cards in hand — photos are great for a ballpark estimate, but condition details can shift the number in either direction. You'll always have that estimate from your photos before you decide to ship, so you know roughly what to expect.
What if I don't accept your final offer?
If we can't agree on a final price for bulk after you've shipped, I'll ship it back to you at my own cost — no questions asked.
Is it safe to ship? What if we disagree on condition after you receive the cards?
Shipping cards is safe when done properly. The prepaid label includes tracking so you can follow the package. For valuable cards, I'll advise on packaging — individual top-loaders in bubble mailers, boxes for larger lots.
On condition: grading has some subjectivity, and I understand that. If what arrives differs from what was shown in photos, I'll reach out to discuss before taking any action. I'm not in the business of surprise lowballing after I have your cards in hand. If we can't agree, I can return the cards to you (shipping on me).
Do you buy bulk, and how is bulk priced?
Yes — bulk is one of my core purchases. You don't need to sort anything before sending.
Here's what I pay per 1,000 cards:
• Commons & Uncommons — $18 • Non-Holo Rares — $45 • Reverse Holos — $75 • Holos — $60
These are starting rates — vintage bulk and large lots (10,000+ cards) often get a bump. Send photos and a rough card count and I'll give you a firm number.
What don't you buy?
A few things I pass on:
• Heavily played or damaged cards where the damage makes them unsellable (water damage, writing on cards, severe creases) • Counterfeit cards — if I suspect fakes, I'll let you know • Accessories only (binders, sleeves, boxes with no cards)
I buy Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, and Yu-Gi-Oh. If you're not sure whether your cards qualify, just send photos — I'll let you know honestly.
How fast will I hear back?
I aim to respond to all quote requests within 24 hours, usually faster. If you submit on a weekend or holiday, allow a little extra time.
Once we agree on a price, the whole process (ship, receive, pay) typically takes 3–5 business days for shipping, or same-day for local meetups.
